HARRISONBURG, Va., April 29, 2011 - Head Coach Maria Malerba announced the James Madison women's tennis yearly award winners on Thursday night for the 2010-11 season.
Freshman Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) was named the team's Most Valuable Player, while sophomore Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) was given the Coach's Award.
Palmucci turned in the best singles record for the Dukes this season with a 27-2 overall record and 16-2 dual-match mark while playing primarily at No. 3 singles.
Nguyen completed the year with a 17-10 overall record and 11-7 mark in dual play at No. 2 singles. She also played at the top doubles spot and finished 13-12 overall and 9-9 in dual matches.
Palmucci and sophomore Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn.) also had the best doubles record for JMU. The duo went 11-7 this year, including a 7-4 mark in dual-match play while playing primarily at No. 3 doubles. Douglass had the best individual doubles record at 17-7, while Palmucci followed at 17-8.
The Dukes went 12-9 this season and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinals after defeating Hofstra 4-0 in the first round.
It was also a milestone year for Malerba, as she surpassed the 400-win plateau for her career. She now holds an all-time record of 403-269 (.600).
