JMU Women's Tennis Downs George Mason 6-1 for First CAA Win

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 3, 2011 - Four players went 2-0 as James Madison cruised to a 6-1 Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis victory against George Mason on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.

The Dukes (10-7, 1-4 CAA) ended a two-match losing skid and picked up their first conference win of the season, while the Patriots (16-11, 0-3 CAA) fell for the second straight day.

JMU opened the match with a doubles sweep to grab the early 1-0 lead and won five of six singles matches for the victory.

Sophomore Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and junior Leah DeMasters (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) rolled to an 8-3 victory against Alison Wingo and Brooke Blackwell to give the Dukes the doubles advantage.

Sophomore Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) and freshman Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) clinched the point for the Dukes with an 8-5 win at No. 2 versus Ashley Delaney and Yasmin Fotovat.

Junior Kinsey Pate (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and sophomore Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) completed the doubles sweep at No. 1 after taking an 8-6 decision from Kiersten Pappas and Lindsay Gray.

In singles play, Bulling doubled JMU's lead to 2-0 rather quickly with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 against Ekaterina Desiatnikova. The lead grew to 3-0 when Mason's top singles player, Pappas, retired due to injury. Pate would take the match by a score of 6-4, 2-1, retire.

The Dukes sealed the team match when senior Kristin Nimitz (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) took a 6-0, 6-4 victory from Stephanie Longueira at No. 6.

Palmucci upped JMU's lead to 5-0 when she defeated Wingo, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, but the Patriots finally got on the board with a win at No. 2. In a back-and-forth match, Gray downed Nguyen 7-6, 6-4.

Douglass closed out the dual with a narrow three-set super breaker victory over Delaney. She won by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.

The Dukes return to action Tuesday afternoon when they host Richmond at 2:30 p.m. at Hillside Courts.
