HARRISONBURG, Va., April 25, 2013 – The James Madison women’s tennis team announced its most valuable player and recipient of the coaches’ award on Thursday afternoon.  The team recognized freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson) as the 2012-13 MVP while sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) earned the 2012-13 Coaches’ Award.

In her first collegiate spring, Wirth went 12-4 in single duals to finish with the top singles record on the squad.  She also tallied a 12-6 record in doubles matches with senior teammate Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian).  The duo earned All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team honors for their ability on the courts.

“Cara made a definite impact on the strength of our program,” head coach Maria Malerba acknowledged.  “Her on-court tenacity helped lead her to the best singles record on the team this spring.  Her contributions on the doubles court demonstrated how much of an all-around player she is.”

Pinchoff earned the Coaches’ Award after a powerful sophomore campaign when she moved from No. 4 singles as a freshman to No. 1 singles as a sophomore.  Her 9-9 record at No. 1 singles earned her All-CAA First Team accolades while her team-leading 14-3 doubles record with senior Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) picked up All-CAA First Team doubles honors.

“Making the conference first team at No. 1 singles is an amazing feat for a sophomore,” Malerba recognized.  “Add to that first team honors in doubles and Taylor showed how her hard work between her freshman and sophomore years paid off.  She displays an intense work ethic and is the consummate team player, always putting the team ahead of herself.”

The Dukes finished the season with a 12-7 record after advancing the semifinal round of the CAA Championships.
