HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 27, 2013 - The James Madison women's tennis team started the 2013 spring season on the right foot by defeating George Mason 5-0 in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., on Sunday afternoon. Played in a 4+1 format at the Greenbriar Tennis Center, JMU took the doubles point before sweeping all four singles matches and start the season 1-0 overall as well as 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The Dukes' scheduled match against Appalachian State was unable to be played.
Freshman Cara Wirth (Reading Pa./Wilson) and senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) won the doubles point by defeating Mason's Kiersten Pappas and Erdenesuren Erdenebat 8-4. The freshman-senior duo is now 7-2 as a team, having gone 6-2 in the fall, and is on a two-match winning streak.
All four Dukes in singles play tallied points for the purple and gold to sweep the Patriots. Junior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) proved victorious over Ashley Delaney (George Mason), winning 6-2, 6-1 to claim her seventh straight victory dating back to fall tournament play.
Fellow junior Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) saw victory in two sets as well, taking the match from Maya Hicks 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) won 6-2, 6-3 over the Patriots' Brittany Pilkington, and senior Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) closed out the day by sweeping Ekaterina Desiatnokova 6-0, 6-1.
JMU will return to the courts on Friday, February 1 in a neutral-court match against league-foe UNCW. Played in Norfolk, Va., the match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
