HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's tennis team had a strong performance on day one of the Liberty Fall Classic, notching seven doubles victories and three singles victories. All three JMU-only doubles teams advanced to the finals round of their flights.
The Dukes were led by senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson), who compiled her first collegiate victories on Friday. As a pair in Flight 2 Doubles, they defeated Appalachian State's Clare Cox and Mackenzie Lasure 8-5 in the quarterfinals and West Virginia State's Jordan Kerns and Charlotte Sandy 8-4 to make the finals. They face Longwood's Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Wirth secured her first singles victory against Norfolk State's Maryna Kariuk 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the Flight 5 Singles semifinals against Lasure at noon. Bulling won her Flight 3 singles quarterfinal match-up against Allie Shulman (Longwood) 6-1, 6-3 and plays ASU's Clare Cox in the semifinals at 10:30 a.m.
Juniors Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) and Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) advanced to the finals round of Flight 3 doubles play after cruising past Liberty's Annisha Domenech and Nicola Wellman 8-2 and Longwood's Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker 8-4. The pair takes on Liberty's Jessie Boda and Cameron Richard at 9 a.m.
Palmucci also won her only singles match of the day 6-4, 6-2 against Andrea Macchiavello from Norfolk State. She sees Allgurin (Longwood) in the Flight 2 Singles semifinals at 10:30 a.m.
Senior Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) and sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) took down Radford's Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls 8-1 in the quarterfinals before battling for a 9-8 victory over Liberty's Valerie Thong and Brittany Yang. The duo faces off against Tea Ivanovic and Carol Kahoun from Virginia Tech in the Flight 1 Doubles final at 9 a.m.
Senior Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) saw doubles action as a partner to Norfolk State's Rebecca Graff. The mixed pairing defeated West Virginia State's Diana Cotoros and Amber Schneider before falling to Boda and Richard from Liberty.
The Dukes start day two of the Liberty Fall Classic on Saturday in doubles action before moving to their singles matches. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m. in Lynchburg.
