ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 12, 2013 – On day two of the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational, James Madison women’s tennis compiled a 13-2 record in singles competition and a 2-1 record in doubles play, with the two winning duos advancing to Sunday’s flight championships.
Junior Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and freshman Alex Huie (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) will compete for the Flight ‘A’ doubles title on Sunday morning after dropping Navy’s Darien Sears and Cassandra Fisbeck 8-1 in Saturday’s semifinal round.
In Flight ‘B’ doubles, senior Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) and freshman Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) defeated Howard’s Audria Bell and Gabrielle Moxey 8-6 in the semifinals. The pair will face George Washington’s Isabella Escobar and Allison Hansen in Sunday’s flight championship after the Colonials won 8-6 in their semifinal match against senior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) and freshman Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy).
Palmucci swept her two Flight ‘B’ singles matches on Saturday, winning her round-of-16 match 8-4 over Navy’s Gabby Winter before dropping Howard’s Stacey Roheman in two sets (6-3, 6-1) in the quarterfinal round. Bradshaw also picked up two wins in the same singles flight as she rolled Mary Washington’s Mackenzie Smith 8-1 in the round-of-16 and downed Fisbeck 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Nelson and Andriescu each won their round-of-16 and quarterfinal matches in Flight ‘C’ singles. Nelson claimed an 8-1 victory over UMBC’s Shannon Cleary before winning 6-2, 6-1 against Moxey. Andriescu earned the 8-4 win over Georgetown’s Madeline Foley, then advanced past Navy’s Audrey Channell with a two-set victory (6-2, 6-2).
Sophomore Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson High School) advanced through the round-of-16 of Flight ‘D’ singles with a bye before taking down Navy’s Sophia Costes 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. In the same flight, redshirt junior Sarah Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) rolled Mary Washington’s Anna Richman 8-0 in the round-of-16 and tallied a two-set win (6-1, 6-3) over Navy’s Vivian Chau in the quarterfinal round.
In Flight ‘A’ singles, Huie earned an 8-2 win over Navy’s Logan Antill in the round-of-16, but fell 7-5, 6-2 to Howard’s Katelyn Stokes in the quarterfinals. Pinchoff lost 8-6 to Howard’s Umarah Mughee in the Flight ‘A’ singles round-of-16.
The Dukes conclude the three-day Navy Blue & Gold Invitational Sunday in Annapolis, Md. Play begins at 9 a.m.
