 Game Notes:.

  • The Dukes finished 2012 with an 11-8 record (4-3 in CAA), falling to Northeaster in the CAA Championship semifinals.
  • League coaches picked JMU to finish third in the conference behind Drexel and Northeastern.
  • JMU has won eight of its last nine season openers, with the lone loss coming at Rutgers (5-1) in 2011.
  • The Kent State Golden Flashes were picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference in 2013.  Last season, the Golden Flashes won a share of the regular season title and fell in the MAC Tournament Finals.
  • Kent State went 9-13 overall in 2012, including a 1-0 win against JMU. 
  • The Golden Flashes return most of their squad from 2012, having lost just one senior from last year’s squad.  They return their leading scorer, Julia Hofmann, as well as their leading assist-giver, Sabrina Binder.

 Game Notes:

  • Last season marked the first meeting between James Madison and Marshall. The Dukes won 2-1 on an overtime goal by Kelly Germain off an assist from Lauren Wilson.
  • The Dukes are coming off a 1-1 showing at the JMU Invitational. They cruised to a 4-1 win over Richmond in the season opener, and fell to two-time defending Atlantic 10 champion La Salle 2-1 in the second game.
  • JMU had four different players score in the season opener as freshmen Meghan Cox and Ashley Herndon, sophomore Kelly Kerrigan and senior Haley Miller all tallied goals in the win.
  • Marshall has outscored its opponents 6-0, defeating Campbell and Kent State by identical 3-0 scores.

  • JMU opens the season by hosting the 2013 Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. The Dukes will play Fordham on Friday nght and Binghamton on Sunday.
  • Virginia Tech will also take part in the event. The Hokies are coached by 1999 James Madison graduate Mike Brizendine. He is assisted by 1996 JMU graduate Patrick McSorley.

  • Day two of the Jefferson Cup picks up with JMU facing tournament host Virginia. This is the 48th meeting between the two teams with UVA holding a 22-15 lead in the all-time series. The Cavaliers defeated JMU 3-2 in Harrisonburg last season.
  • Libero Katie Daorai enters her senior season ranked fourth on the school's all-time dig list with 1,167. She needs 404 to pass Lindsay Collingwood for second all-time. 
  • Two Dukes return in 2013 after missing most of 2012 with injuries. Setter Kristi Richardson and middle blocker Kelly Maguire return after combining to appear in 61 matches in 2011.
