HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 25, 2013 – La Salle scored two unanswered goals in the second half to top James Madison 2-1 on Sunday, wrapping up play in the 2013 Fairfield Inn by Marriott Women’s Soccer Tournament.
Freshman Meghan Cox gave the Dukes (1-1) the first half lead with a terrific goal in the 29th minute. Cox scored the unassisted goal from over 30 yards out, finding the top left side of the net. It was her second goal in two career college games and helped land her on the all-tournament team.
A turning point in the game came in the second half when it appeared the Dukes added on to their lead with a goal in the 70th minute, but it was nullified due to an offsides call. The Explorers took advantage and shifted momentum with a game-tying goal from Kelsey Haycook just 37 seconds later.
Renee Washington buried the game-winner with just over 11 minutes to play, giving La Salle a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament. Haycook, who scored the lone goal in the Explorers’ 1-0 win over Old Dominion on Friday night, and Anna Dolhansky both assisted on Washington’s goal.
Despite the loss, James Madison goaltender Ellen Forrest had a solid game, giving the Dukes a chance to win with multiple diving and leaping saves. She finished with six saves and was named to the all-tournament team, as was teammate Shannon Rano.
The Explorers’ Katie Getzinger improved to 2-0 in goal. She stopped four of the Dukes’ five shots on goal.
The Dukes will travel for a non-conference game at Marshall on Friday. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
