Volleyball to Host Purple/Gold Scrimmage on August 20

HARRISONBURG, Va., August 2, 2013 – With less than a month until the start of the 2013 season, the James Madison volleyball team announced today that it will host a Purple/Gold scrimmage on Tuesday, August 20. The intrasquad match will be held in Sinclair Gymnasium/Godwin Hall at 7 p.m. Admission to the scrimmage is free.

The Dukes look to build on a season that saw them reach their third straight Colonial Athletic Association championship semifinal. The 2013 squad went 13-16 overall and 5-7 in the CAA. The sixth-seeded Dukes upset third-seeded Northeastern, coming back from 2-0 down to pull the upset.

JMU returns three players that appeared in more than 20 matches last season. Leading the way is senior libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) who started 25 matches at the libero position. She collected a team-best 425 digs and currently ranks fourth in school history with 1,167 digs. Junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) is the top returning attack, averaging 2.61 kills per set on .a team-best .267 attack percentage. She also led the squad with 94 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Niski (St. Charles Ill./St. Charles East) made the CAA All-Rookie team after averaging 2.32 kills per set and 2.54 digs per set. She was one of two players to start all 29 matches a year ago. The fourth returning starter is sophomore outside hitter MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) who average 2.69 digs, 1.39 kills and 0.44 blocks per set.

Two players for the Dukes, redshirt junior middle blocker Kelly Maguire (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and redshirt junior setter Kristi Richardson (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) are due back after missing much of last season with injuries.

JMU opens its season on Friday, August 30 in the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. Madison takes on Montana in the season opener Friday night before facing Virginia and Marshall on Saturday.
