HARRISONBURG, Va., March 26, 2008 – Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) had two of James Madison University’s four home runs in an 8-4 non-conference baseball win over Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.

JMU improved to 16-7 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak, the first consecutive losses all season for the Dukes.  VMI had a five-game win streak stopped.

Caseres matched his career high with four hits in four at bats.  He scored three times and drove in a pair of runs, both on solo home runs.  It was the third multiple home run outing for Caseres, all in the last 10 games when he has hit seven of his team-leading nine long balls.

Redshirt sophomore Chris Johnson (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Sophomore Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) had two hits, a walk, and scored once.  Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) had two hits and an RBI.  Sophomore Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) had a two-run home run and walked twice.  Freshman David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added a solo home run.

Redshirt senior Trevor Kaylid (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) improved to 3-1 after allowing three runs on nine hits and matching his season high with five strikeouts in five innings.  Freshman Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) earned his first collegiate save after allowing three hits, including a solo home run, with a career-high six strikeouts in the last four innings.

Freshman Lefty Flora (Roanoke, Va./Northside) took the loss for VMI after allowing five runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Junior A.J. Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) had three hits and a run scored for the Keydets.  Sophomore Jordan Ballard (Troy, Va./Monticello) had a pair of solo home runs.  Sophomore Tanner Biagini (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) hit a two-run shot for VMI.

The Keydets grabbed the early lead in the first inning when Biagini, the third batter in the game, sailed a two-run home run over the fence in left field.

The lead was short lived as JMU went ahead to stay in the bottom of the second on a two-out rally.  Sophomore Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) singled and Fabiaschi tied the game with one swing with his first home run of the season to left centerfield.  Foltz then reached on a bunt single and moved to second on the second throwing error of the inning by Biagini at third base.  He came around to score on a double by Knight that missed being his first collegiate home run by a few feet off the wall.

The Dukes padded the lead with a pair of solo home runs in the third by Caseres and Herbek.  It was the third round tripper by Herbek.

VMI got one back in the fifth on the first solo home run by Ballard.  However JMU responded with a two-run single by Johnson in the bottom of the inning.  The Dukes added a Caseres solo shot in the seventh before Ballard finished the scoring in the ninth with another home run.

The Dukes will hit the road for their second straight Colonial Athletic Association weekend series, heading to Hofstra beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday.
