RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 26, 2008 – Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield) was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week after leading James Madison University to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton on Sunday.
Knight factored into both ends of the doubleheader, picking up his first collegiate victory in the opener and his first collegiate save in the second game. He entered the first game with a 7-7 tie and a runner on second base with no out. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, Knight struck out consecutive batters looking to escape the inning. In the second game, Knight recorded three strikeouts in the ninth to pick up the save, including the clinching strikeout with the tying run on second base.
Altogether, Knight worked two innings with five strikeouts during the two appearances. While the CAA award covers games played through Sunday, Knight kept up the hot play on Tuesday against Radford with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 scoreless innings on the mound. He also started as the designated hitter and hit a two-run double in his second collegiate at bat.
