HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 30, 2012 - In a best-of-three format, it took just two games for the Gold squad to claim the victory over Purple as James Madison held its annual Purple and Gold World Series last week at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

The gold-clad Dukes breezed to a 10-4 win in game one on Wednesday, which doubled as JMU's Scout Day with approximately a dozen Major League scouts in attendance.  Gold then proved it could also win a close game with a 6-5 triumph Thursday to claim the series.

A pair of newcomers highlighted the Gold performance.  Junior outfielder Tyler Gregory, a transfer from Wallace Community College in Alabama, hit .667 in the series with an on-base percentage of .800 and six runs scored.  Pitching newcomer Mark Gunst opened eyes with five innings of work while allowing two runs and earning a victory.

JMU has concluded the formal portion of its Fall non-traditional workouts but will continue preparations through the winter for the 2013 season.  The Dukes open the year with a tournament at Coastal Carolina Feb. 15-17.  That will be followed by 18 out of 19 games at home over a one-month span.  The Dukes return eight position starters and three starting pitchers from last year's squad.
