HARRISONBURG, Va., May 22, 2012 - Junior outfielder Cole McInturff (Centreville, Va./Westfield), sophomore third baseman Conner Brown (Richmond, Va./Godwin), sophomore utility player Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and freshman shortstop Chad Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) were each honored as the Colonial Athletic Association held its annual awards banquet Tuesday night at the Festival Conference and Student Center on the eve of the 2012 Virginia 529 CAA Baseball Championship.
McInturff, Brown and McFarland were each chosen as Third Team All-CAA selections while Carroll was a CAA All-Rookie Pick. Hofstra outfielder Danny Poma was named CAA Player of the Year while his teammate, second baseman Matt Ford, was the league's Defensive Player of the Year. William and Mary right-hander Matt Davenport was tabbed CAA Pitcher of the Year and Northeastern second baseman Jason Vosler was named Rookie of the Year. UNCW skipper Mark Scalf was honored as Coach of the Year.
McInturff led the Dukes with a .360 batting average, which included 10 doubles and three triples. He drove in 25 runs and scored 35 with a .427 on-base percentage. Known for his speed, McInturff stole 14 bases while roaming center field all season for the Dukes. He led the team with 22 multiple-hit games, including nine of the squad's 37 games of three hits or more. McInturff was the hot bat down the stretch, hitting .441 in the final 16 games of the season, including .484 in the final seven games in the month of May.
Despite missing 14 games due to injuries, Brown enjoyed a steady season at third base for the Dukes. He was second on the team with a .338 average with 10 doubles, two triples and three home runs. Brown scored 31 runs and drove in 33. Like McInturff, Brown provided a hot bat in the final push of the season. He hit .500 with five doubles and two triples in his last nine games before being shut down in the last month of the season with his injury.
McFarland was the only repeat honoree for the Dukes after earning Third Team All-CAA honors as a freshman. He missed 24 games due to injury but finished with the third-best average for the Dukes at .330. He scored 32 runs and hit eight doubles and one triple. McFarland posted the best on-base percentage on the team with 20 walks and had a .995 fielding percentage on 196 defensive chances. In his first nine games before getting hurt, he hit .457.
Carroll started 51 games as the shortstop for the Dukes and hit .279 with six doubles, two triples and one home run. He scored 33 runs and drove in 28 while stealing 13 bases. He was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on March 6 after going 6-for-11 in a three-game series against Lafayette. With that week included, he hit .421 over an 11-game stretch of the season from Feb. 22 through March 9.
