HARRISONBURG, Va., April 30, 2012 - James Madison freshman right-hander Patrick Toohers (Florham Park, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) followed the best start of his young career with an even better one against George Mason on Friday as he was rewarded with Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week honors.
Toohers allowed just one hit in eight innings of work against the Patriots to match the season high for innings that he established the week before. He struck out four and walked one but was saddled with the loss as JMU's defense allowed two unearned runs on four fielding errors in the 3-2 setback.
The effort by Toohers led a JMU rotation that pitched a 2.00 ERA in the three-game weekend series against Mason. For the season, he lowered his numbers to a 3.36 ERA and .236 opponent average in 56 1/3 innings. His last two starts have gone for a combined one earned run in 16 innings while his last seven starts have combined for a 2.74 ERA and .208 average against.
Toohers was selected as the league's Pitcher of the Week last week with one earned run allowed in eight innings at Hofstra. Both awards have come while facing the team sitting second in the league standings at the time.
JMU is currently off for semester examinations and will resume action on Tuesday, May 8 at Radford at 6 p.m.
