Morton Recognized by CAA: Kyle Morton was named CAA Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 14.
The freshman goalkeeper made nine saves in his first career game appearance in JMU's 2-1 double-overtime victory at UNCW on Oct. 10. He followed that with four saves in a 1-1 double-overtime tie at home vs. defending CAA champion Delaware on Oct. 14.
Freshmen & Firsts at UNCW: Freshmen were the keys to JMU's Oct. 10 double-overtime win at UNCW as Eric Schmidt scored his first career JMU goal (JMU's first goal of the game) and goalkeeper Kyle Morton, in his first career game appearance, finished with nine saves.
Another first came from sophomore Nick Njuki, whose game-winning score was his first college goal.
McLaughlin Moves Up on Assist List: Redshirt senior Christian McLaughlin recorded his 18th career assist Oct. 14 vs. Delaware. He moved from tied for 19th place to tied for 18th place on JMU's career list. McLaughlin shares 18th place with Scott Davis (1988-91).
First Road Win: JMU's 2-1 double-overtime victory at UNCW on Oct. 10 marked the Dukes' first win away from home this season. JMU, which concluded a stretch of three consecutive road games at UNCW, is now 1-4-1 away from home, including 1-2-1 on its opponents' home fields and 0-2-0 in neutral-site games.
Zimmerman Honored by NASL: Former JMU player Nick Zimmerman (2005-08) has been named one of the North American Soccer League's "Best XI" for the 2012 season.
Zimmerman was one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team, which was chosen by the league's eight head coaches.
The 2009 JMU graduate led the Carolina RailHawks in scoring and was second in the NASL in goals. He finished regular-season NASL play with 15 goals.
Zimmerman completed his second year with the RailHawks, who advanced to the NASL semifinals before losing 5-4 on aggregate goals to Tampa Bay.
Zimmerman was a four-year midfield starter at JMU. He earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as a senior in 2008 and was a two-time All-CAA selection (2007, 2008). He previously played for the New York Red Bulls (2009) and Philadelphia Union (2010) of Major League Soccer.
Five Opponents Projected for NCAA Field: Five of the Dukes' opponents are projected to be among the 48 teams in the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, according to the website TopDrawerSoccer.com. The weekly rankings are a running attempt to project the postseason NCAA Tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth. The Week 9 rankings were released Oct. 15.
