From Major League Soccer Reports
KANSAS
CITY, Kan., Sept. 21 2012 -- Former JMU men's soccer player CJ Sapong (JMU 2007-10) has been rated number two on Major League
Soccer's list of the league's top players under 24 years old.
The Sporting Kansas City forward, who has scored game-winning goals in KC's
last two matches, is in his second season of MLS play. He was the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year.
According to the MLS "24 Under 24" feature, "Sapong is once
again the undisputed first-choice center forward and he has already capitalized
on the opportunity with two goals in his first three games as a starter."
Sapong is further described in
the MLS article as "a handful. He's going to be in your
face, he's going to run every ball down, he's going to challenge for
every head ball. ... An athletic, strong forward that can really cause center backs
problems ... Has pace, skill, size, power and strength ... Tremendous physical
qualities. He's a very strong, physical runner ... He's a hard worker ... Powerful,
dynamic young forward with lots of skills, and a great future with the US
national team ... Athletic, strong and courageous ... Has the ability to best an
opponent with speed or power ... Has good foot skills ... Fits extremely well with
Sporting KC ... Has a good attitude and shows good energy on the field ... I would
consider him one of the best strikers in MLS."
At JMU Sapong was voted the 2010
Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year after leading the CAA and
ranking among the leading NCAA Division I players in scoring with 33
points. In 2010 he shared the CAA lead
in goals (12) and game-winning goals (4) and also topped the conference with
nine assists. Sapong finished his JMU
career ranked fifth all-time in points (95), seventh in goals (37) and fourth
in game-winning goals (12).
