HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept.2,
2012 -- James Madison (1-2-1) and Temple (0-1-1) battled to a scoreless overtime tie in men's soccer Sunday afternoon in the second
round of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational Tournament at University Park.
The Dukes extended their home unbeaten streak to 13 games (11-0-2).
In the day's first game, Virginia Tech (3-1-0) scored
all four of its goals in the second half as the Hokies shut out St.
Bonaventure (0-4-0) 4-0.
In the JMU game, the Dukes out-shot Temple 30-4, but only four of JMU's shots
were on goal.
"There were times that we played
really well," said JMU head coach Tom
Martin. "We were down a man for
a long stretch, and we were still the more aggressive team. The shots were heavily lopsided in our favor,
but the (Temple) keeper didn't have to make too many saves. What that tells me is our finishing wasn't
sharp. (But) I was proud of the way the guys kept attacking."
Both teams had several
quality scoring opportunities in regulation and overtime.
In the 11th minute, a shot off a
rebound by Temple freshman Jared Martinelli (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) was saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Colin Newcity (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg).
Newcity made another stop on a 22-yard shot by senior
Cody Calafiore (Howell, N.J./Howell)
in the 25th minute.
In the second half, a shot in the 56th
minute by JMU freshman Tom Fouhy
(Buckinghamshire, England/Dr.
Challoner's) from inside the box was just wide of the goal. Dukes sophomore Josh Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint
College) had a chance with a sharply-angled shot in the 64th minute, but again,
the ball went just wide of the net. Temple sophomore goalkeeper Dan Scheck (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) stopped a shot by redshirt senior Christian
McLaughlin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) in the 71st minute.
Temple nearly got a goal in the final minutes of regulation, but an apparent
score by senior Andrew
Dodds (West Chester, Pa./Haverford) with 5:04 to play was disallowed when
he was ruled offside.
A shot by JMU redshirt junior Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) hit the post with 4:06 left in regulation.
In overtime, a shot from 26 yards by JMU's McLaughlin was just wide of the goal
midway through the first 10-minute period.
Temple's Martinelli hit the post with a shot just a minute later.
Newcity and Scheck each finished with four saves in the shutout.
JMU played a man down for the final 15:29 of regulation and most of the first
overtime period after Grant received a red card in the 75th minute. The teams played at even strength for the
final 2:11 of the first overtime and the entire second overtime after Temple senior Homero
Rodriguez (El Paso, Texas/Coronado) received a red card in the 98th minute.
Virginia Tech scored four times in a span of just over 21 minutes in the second
period in its win over St. Bonaventure.
Freshman Daniel Lauretano (Chester,
Va./Thomas Dale) took advantage of a ball that rebounded off the Bonnies'
defense following a Tech corner kick. He
scored on a shot from just inside the 18 in the 59th minute to get the Hokies
on the scoreboard.
Tech's second goal came after sophomore Ben
Strong (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) served a ball into the box from the
right side on the end line. Junior David Clemens (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa)
controlled the ball and knocked it into the net from two yards away, scoring in
the 67th minute.
Less than a minute later, redshirt freshman Drew Hartell (Virginia Beach, Va./F.W. Cox) controlled a ball that
rebounded off a defender and scored from close range to give Tech a 3-0 lead.
In the 80th minute, a header by sophomore Mike
Wilkie (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) rebounded off a defender to freshman
Connor Pompilio (Ashburn, Va./Briar
Woods), who headed the ball into the goal.
The Bonnies' best scoring opportunities came in the 36th minute, when a header
by junior Daniel Iannacito (Richmond
Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Liseux) was just wide, and in 85th minute. The late-game chance came when redshirt freshman goalkeeper Hunter Maricle (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) made a save
on a header by junior Zach Sullivan
(Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute).
The Bonnies played most of the game a man down after junior Kolby Banker (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand
Island) received a red card for a tackle on a
breakaway 19:21 into the match.
Tech out-shot St. Bonaventure 27-10.
Tech junior goalkeeper Kyle
Renfro (Forest, Va./Brookville) made three saves and Maricle had one save
to share the shutout. Bonnies freshman
goalkeeper Ben Cowman (Ajax, Ontario) finished
with 12 saves.
