Timmy Albright scored for the Spiders just 7:25 into the match, and that was enough to give UR the win.
UR goalkeeper Thomas Hand made five saves to get the shutout. Hand made one stop on a shot by sophomore Boyd Reid (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) in the closing seconds of the game.
Dukes redshirt junior goalkeeper Colin Newcity (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had one save.
Four of JMU's starting 11 were in the Dukes' starting lineup for the first time in their college careers.
It was the season-opening game for both teams.
JMU next faces Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in a noon game Sunday in the final round of the Hokie Invitational. SIUE beat Virginia Tech 3-1 in Friday's other game in the Hokie Invitational.
