HARRISONBURG, Va., June 1, 2012 -- A score by former JMU men's soccer player CJ Sapong (2007-10) has been selected Major League Soccer's "Goal of the Week" for week 12 of the 2012 season.

Sapong, who plays for Sporting Kansas City, "used a brilliant ball from Kei Kamara and a technical finish to give SKC an early advantage on their way to a 2-1 win over San Jose on Sunday," according to the MLS web site.

The reigning MLS Rookie of the Year won the honor by a wide margin after fans voted his clinical volley just five minutes into the match as the AT&T Goal of the Week.

The description of the goal from MLSsoccer.com:  "Some sublime build-up led to Graham Zusi finding Kei Kamara on the right side of the pitch. Kamara then whipped in a perfect cross to the back edge of the six-yard box which found a streaking Sapong and gave Sporting KC the early advantage."

The award is the first of the U.S. national team prospect's young MLS career. Sapong now has four goals through 11 games after scoring five in 34 appearances last season.

Montreal's Patrice Bernier held onto second place, narrowly edging out Chivas USA's Juan Pablo Ángel and Chicago's Sebastián Grazzini.

Final Results of Fan Voting
1. C.J. Sapong (SKC), 37%

2. Patrice Bernier (MTL), 18%
3. Juan Pablo Ángel (CHV), 17%
4. Sebastián Grazzini (CHI), 16%
5. Emilio Rentería (CLB), 12%
