WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Jan. 19, 2012 - James Madison
men's soccer coach Tom Martin has been named the 2011 Virginia Coach of
the Year, and four Dukes' players have been named to the All-State Team.
The All-State honors were determined in a vote by members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Dukes earning all-state honors included junior midfielder Paul Wyatt
(Modbury, England/Ivybridge), senior forward Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) and
redshirt senior goalkeeper Justin
Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton) on the First Team and senior defender Jason Gannon (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill) on the Second
Team.
Martin, the 2011
Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, guided JMU to a 13-5-2 record,
first place in the CAA regular-season standings and the round of 16 of the NCAA
Tournament. JMU led Virginia teams in
winning percentage and was the only state team ranked in the NCAA Top 30 in
winning percentage. The Dukes ranked 23rd
in the final Soccer America Top 25
and 20th in the final NSCAA Coaches Top 25 and was the highest-ranked Virginia
team in both polls.
Innes was the second-leading scorer in Virginia with 13 goals. He was selected to
the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Second Team and the All-CAA Second
Team. He ranked among the top-16 players
in the NCAA in goals and points average (1.53).
Epperson was an NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third
Team selection. He led the CAA in
shutouts (9) and shutout average (0.45) and his nine season shutouts
ranks fourth-best all-time at JMU.
Epperson played all of the team's 1848:24 minutes in goal in 2011.
Gannon, a four-year starter, helped anchor
a Dukes' defense that recorded nine shutouts and a 1.22 goals-against average. He also was named to the All-CAA Third Team.
Wyatt ranked second on the JMU team in goals
(6) and points (15) and was named to the NSCAA
All-America Second Team, the NSCAA All-South
Atlantic Region First Team and the All-CAA First Team.
