HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison University's Duke Club, the fund-raising arm of the Athletic Department, is closing in on 1,000 members it its year-long push to add 2,011 new members. As of July 25, the membership drive has generated 946 new memberships (a "new member" is someone who was not a member in 2010) and has already surpassed the all-time record for a year.  Reaching the ambitious goal of 2,011 will require a great fall push, which the Duke Club is ramping up for.

"We still have five months to go and we are going to use every day of it," Brian Powell, Assistant Director of the Duke Club, said. "We still have the football season to make a splash, some calling programs, a former student-athlete contest for our Letterwinner Chapter and our rep system. It will be challenge to get there but it's still in our sights and we are excited about the success so far."

Over the last six years, the Duke Club has averaged 625 new members per year and a current member renewal rate of 75 percent. Currently, 70 percent of Duke Club members have renewed, with more renewals expected to come in this fall.

"A sizeable portion of memberships are renewed in the fall and at the end of the calendar year," Powell continued. "If you are not a season ticket holder for football, then you can wait much longer in the year to make your gift. We expect our renewal rate to finish above the 80-percent mark."

If the Duke Club can reach both an 80-percent renewal rate and the lofty goal of 2,011 new members, 2011 total membership will finish at over 3,800 - a 67-percent increase.  It would also help the Duke Club easily surpass membership totals for donor clubs at Richmond, ODU, Appalachian State, and Montana.

"This campaign was born out of the need to grow and base and increase funding for scholarships and budget," Powell concluded. "It's exciting to see it coming together. If we can grow our base in such a large way and hang on to that momentum, it will change the landscape of our program."
