HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison University Athletics handed out its top departmental awards at the program's annual banquet held on campus, April 25, with senior CJ Sapong taking home the Male Athlete of the Year honor.
Sapong, from Manassas, Va., was named the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, College Soccer News All-America and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's 2010 Team of the Season. The JMU forward led the CAA and ranked among the leading NCAA Division I players in scoring with 33 points. He shared the CAA lead in goals (12) and game-winning goals (4) and also topped the conference with nine assists. A four-time All-CAA First Team selection, Sapong finished his JMU career ranked fifth all-time in points (95), seventh in goals (37) and fourth in game-winning goals (12). He was also the 2010 Virginia men's soccer Player of the Year and was the No. 10 pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, the highest draft selection ever by a JMU soccer player and the only first-round selection in program history.
Seniors Dawn Evans (women's basketball) was named the Female Athlete of the Year, while senior Lindsay Callahan (volleyball) and junior Dixon Wright (football) were voted the program's Gary '81 & Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
