HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 6, 2010 -- Hofstra clinched a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win at James Madison Saturday night at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Hofstra improved its overall record to 7-6-5 and its league record to 5-3-3. The Pride will be the number three seed in the CAA Tournament, joining top seed and tournament host William and Mary along number two seed Virginia Commonwealth. The final team for the four-team tournament has not yet been determined.
JMU finished its season with a 9-7-2 overall record and a 4-6-1 CAA record.
Freshman Shaun Foster (Southport, England/Stanley) scored off a header at the near post off a corner kick from freshman Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany/Jena) in the 10th minute to give the Pride its first goal of the night.
Junior Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados/Harrison College) scored the second goal in the 62nd minute of play. Freshman Florian Popp (Bautzen, Germany/Lausitzer) sent a pass from the left side of the field into the box to Carrington. JMU senior goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) challenged Carrington but the Pride player got by Manahan and shot on an open net from 10 yards out.
JMU held a 19-12 shot advantage and had at least four near misses.
Sophomore Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) hit the post on a shot in the 51st minute and hit the crossbar on another attempt in the 61st minute. A shot by junior Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) in the 63rd minute hit the crossbar, and a shot by sophomore Markus Bjørkheim (Bergen, Norway/Fana Gymnas) in the 82nd minute was just wide right of the goal.
Pride freshman goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini (Monte Porzio Catone, Italy/Bolzanovo) made four saves to get the shutout, and Manahan finished with three saves.
