HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 6, 2013 – Northeastern scored twice in a span of three minutes, handing the James Madison men’s soccer team a 2-1 defeat in the CAA opener for both teams Sunday at University Park.

All three goals were scored in the first 6:55 of the game. JMU started the flurry of offense with a goal in the fourth minute. Redshirt junior Steven Mashinski (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) scored for the second straight game, getting behind the goalie for a wide-open shot.

Northeastern (4-4-2, 0-1 CAA) responded immediately, scoring the equalizer just 48 seconds later. Five foot, three inch Dante Marini used a header for his team-leading third goal of the season. Mike Lobben set up the score with a cross.

The Huskies scored again exactly three minutes later. Marini again factored in on a goal. His shot was saved by Dukes’ goalie Bill Groben (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale), but Terrence Carter was there for the rebound and registered the game-winner.

Sophomore Michael Russo (McLean, Va./McLean), who like Mashinski scored his first goal of the season in JMU’s 3-0 win over Loyola on Wednesday, nearly added his second goal of the year in the second half. He just missed tying the game with a shot that bounced off the left post in the 76th minute.

The Dukes had one last solid opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds, but sophomore Eric Schmidt’s (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) header attempt went wide right.

Dylan Faber made five saves to pick up the win for Northeastern, while Groben stopped three shots for JMU.

It was a physical game throughout with the two teams combining for seven yellow cards.

The loss evened the Dukes’ record at 4-4-1 overall. They will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against CAA foe Delaware. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live by Madizone HD Sportsnet presented by the JMU Alumni Association.
