Did You Know?
JMU and North Carolina last met on Nov. 20, 1994, in an NCAA Tournament first-round game played in Chapel Hill, N.C., and won 3-0 by the Dukes.   Former JMU associate head coach and 2010 JMU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Patrick McSorley ('96) scored twice and 2008 JMU Hall of Fame inductee Kaarlo Kankkunnen ('95) contributed a goal and an assist.  (McSorley is now an assistant at Virginia Tech.)
Later that same afternoon, some 600 miles away in Brookline, Mass., another JMU-North Carolina NCAA Tournament showdown was taking place at Northeastern University's Parsons Field. There, the JMU field hockey team beat the Tar Heels 2-1 to capture the NCAA Championship. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime play, and the Dukes prevailed 4-2 in a penalty stroke "shoot-out" to win the national title.

Scouting Longwood:  The Lancers have a 1-2-0 record that includes a season-opening 2-0 home win over Randolph, a 3-1 loss at Liberty and a 1-0 home loss to North Florida.  The Lancers compete in the five-team Atlantic Soccer Conference, a league that includes Adelphi, Houston Baptist, Howard and New Jersey Tech.

The Series vs. Longwood:
JMU has won the only previous meetings, a 3-0 victory in Harrisonburg in 2004 and another 3-0 decision in Harrisonburg in 2010.

Scouting North Carolina:  The Tar Heels moved into the top spot in all three (Soccer America/NSCAA/College Soccer News) national polls after knocking off top-ranked Louisville 2-1 on Sept. 4 in Chapel Hill.  UNC, which takes a 3-0 record into a Sept. 10 game at Virginia Tech, also owns a season-opening 3-1 home win over North Carolina Wilmington and a 5-1 victory over Oregon State.
The Tar Heels were picked by league coaches to win the nine-team Atlantic Coast Conference.  UNC is playing under first-year head coach Carlos Somoano, a former nine-year assistant under Elmar Bolowich, who after 22 UNC seasons is now coaching at Creighton.

The Series vs. North Carolina:
JMU leads the series 2-1-0, but all of the current Dukes were preschoolers the last time the teams played, in 1994.  That 1994 meeting came in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, played at UNC.  JMU shut out UNC 3-0, then beat Duke 2-1 in a home second-round game before losing 4-1 at Virginia in the quarterfinals.
