Courtesy:JMUSports.com Release:12/07/2012

HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison football coaches Jeff Durden and Chris Malone have been released from the coaching staff, Head Coach Mickey Matthews announced today. Durden had served on the coaching staff for nine years as the offensive coordinator and eight as the quarterbacks coach, while Malone was with the program for six years as the offensive line coach and one as the run game coordinator.

"Today, I released offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jeff Durden and run game coordinator/offensive line coach Chris Malone from their duties on our staff," Matthews said. "On behalf of everyone at JMU, I want to say thank you for their dedication and numerous contributions to the football program. It is a tough day because they are good friends and excellent football coaches. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors."

JMU Athletics Director Jeff Bourne is traveling today as a part of his role with the NCAA FCS Football Committee and will not be available for comment.  He has provided the following statement regarding the JMU Football program.

I am aware that Coach Matthews announced today his decision regarding changes to his staff.  I want to thank Coaches Durden and Malone for their years of service to JMU and our football program. Jeff and Chris have represented our program well and made a difference in the lives of many of our student-athletes. They both have my sincere best wishes for future success.

I support Coach Matthews and his leadership of our football program.  In leading his team, Coach Matthews is responsible for all aspects of our program and achieving our expectations for success.

Our record this year, 7-4, and being excluded from post-season competition clearly is not our goal.  We expect our football team to compete for the CAA Football Championship every year.  Further, we expect our football program to reach and advance in the FCS Playoffs annually and be among the final teams in pursuit of a National Championship.
