Volleyball Swept on the Road at Northeastern, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass., Oct. 7, 2012 – Four Madison players hit over .300, including a .455 attack percentage from sophomore middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs), but Northeastern hit .424 as a team to sweep past the James Madison volleyball team, 3-0, at Solomon Court in Boston, Mass., Sunday afternoon. 

Northeastern won its fifth straight in conference action to improve to 16-3 overall and 5-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. JMU lost its second straight to drop to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in league play. 

Briones collected a match-high 13 kills, committing just three errors in 22 attempts to hit .424 on the day. She added two digs and a block for the Dukes. Senior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) finished with nine kills on .304 hitting, also contributing three digs, a block and a service ace while freshman outside hitter MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) hit .333 with a career-high eight kills in 15 attempts. Senior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished with six kills on .357 hitting to go with four digs, a block and an assist. 

Senior Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) and freshman Sarah Patterson (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) combined for 37 assists, six digs and three service aces from the setter position for JMU. Junior libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had a team-best nine digs, an assist and a service ace. 

Middle blocker Nicole Bishop had a team-high 12 kills against just two errors on 19 attempts for a .526 attack percentage. Bishop also had two blocks and two digs for the Huskies. Outside hitter Kelly Bacon added eight kills on .316 hitting to go with six digs and three blocks while middle blocker Nichole Kurz hit .625 with six kills, and a match-high four blocks. Setters Ina Kamenova and Jillian Briner contributed 20 and 15 assists, respectively, with Briner putting up six kills, three blocks and five digs. Libero Natalia Skiba led all players with 11 digs. 

In addition to outhitting JMU .424 to .315, Northeastern led 7-2 in blocks. JMU collected 10 service aces to eight for the Huskies, but had just 31 digs in three sets played. 

JMU returns to the court next weekend as it hosts Delaware and Towson for a pair of CAA matches. The Dukes host the Blue Hens at Sinclair Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 before taking on the Tigers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
