Women's Tennis Hits Hard on Day Two of Tribe Invite

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Oct, 6, 2012 -- James Madison women's tennis went an impressive 5-1 in day-two doubles competition Saturday at the 2012 Tribe Invitational on its way to a 9-3 record for the day.

In the Katrin Guenther consolation semifinals, sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and senior Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) defeated Penn State's Carmen Sandor and Jacqueline Zuhse 8-4.  Pinchoff and Nguyen then cruised through William and Mary's Maria Belaya and Sydney Smith to take fifth place in the Katrin Guenther doubles flight.

Pinchoff also had a successful day in singles competition, taking a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Penn State's Katherine Whiteaway in their semifinal matchup of the Margie Waters singles flight.

In the consolation bracket of the Margie Waters Singles flight, junior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) took down Mafalda Lhorca (Norfolk state) 6-0, 6-3.  Earlier in the day, Andriescu paired up with junior Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) to defeat William and Mary's Nina Vulovich and Jackie Lee 8-3 before falling 9-7 to Kansas' Anastasija Trubica and Claire Dreyer in the championship match of Michelle O doubles flight.

Palmucci moved to 2-1 on her day when she defeated Lee again in their Margie Water singles semifinal match. 

Senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) gave the Dukes their fourth singles victory on Saturday when she battled through a three-set match to win over Old Dominion's Melissa Esnal Olguin (6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1).  Bulling was a perfect 3-0 on day two of the tournament, including two doubles victories with freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson).  The duo took down both Norfolk State's Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca and Old Dominion's Faith Atiso and Nika Khmolovska by scores of 9-7.

JMU will finish the three-day tournament tomorrow in Williamsburg, Va.  Singles play will take place Sunday morning.
