Courtesy:JMUSports.com Release:03/24/2012

WALLACE, N.C. - Battling rain throughout the day, the James Madison women's golf team is in fifth after the first completed round at the UNCW Seahawk Classic, March 24. Hosted by UNCW, the two-day, 54-hole event is being played at River Landing Golf Course (Par 72-6,106 yards) in Wallace, N.C.

The 11 teams completed the first 18 holes when play was suspended midway through the second round due to darkness. Sporadic rain showers interrupted play several times Saturday, leaving the 62-player field scrambling throughout much of the day. JMU had a 15-over 303 in the opening round to sit in fifth place. Longwood is the 18-hole leader at 3-over 291, with East Carolina one shot back at 4-over 292. Old Dominion is third at 6-over 294, with host UNCW trailing the Monarchs by two shots at 8-over 296 in fourth.

Senior Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) posted her third straight sub-par round in tournament play with a 2-under 70, putting her in alone in second one shot back of opening round leader Amanada Steinhagen of Longwood. Sophomore Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) is tied for 21st at 4-over 76, with freshman Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) returning to action from an injury and shooting a 5-over 77, tying her for 27th. Freshman Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Phillipines/St. Paul College-Pasig) is tied for 45th at 8-over 80, with senior Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio La Montana) completing the JMU effort in a tie for 51st at 10-over 72.

The Dukes return to the course tomorrow to complete the second round and play the final 18, weather permitting, starting at 8:45 a.m.
