HARRISONBURG, Va. -- James Madison University women's golf has signed Maria Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines) and Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) to National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Paul Gooden announced today. The pair will join the Dukes as freshmen for the 2011-12 academic year.
"I am very excited about Maria and Shabril coming to JMU,"Gooden commented. "They are both outstanding recruits who have a lot of talent. Both are a very hard working, dedicated players who have the desire to compete and get better. I know Shabril and Maria will help take our program to the top of women's college golf."
Legaspi has been at the Junior World Championships the last two years, including making the cut at the 2010 tournament at the famed Torrey Pines with rounds of 77-76-73 on the Par-74 course before finishing at 15-over 311 to tie for 31st out of more than 200 golfers in the tournament.
Brewer has five victories and four other top three's in junior golf competition and is currently ranked #73 nationally on the the Junior Golf Scoreboard with .04 scoring differential. She won the 2010 AJGA Junior at River Creek, shooting a 1-under par 143 to take the title by two shots. She also won four tournaments on the 2009 Middle Atlantic PGA Junior Golf Circuit, as well as tying for second at the 2009 Virginia Junior Girls' Championship. She also qualified for the nationally-renowned 2009 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.
The Dukes have wrapped up the fall portion of the 2010-11 schedule and will be back on the course on Sun.-Tue., Feb. 20-22, 2011 at the Kiawah Island Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.
