RICHMOND, Va., April 19, 2011 - The Colonial Athletic Association announced its pairings for this week's Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Men's Tennis Championship that takes place April 21-24 at Old Dominion University's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
James Madison received the six seed and will face third-seeded UNC Wilmington in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 22. The match-up is set to begin at 4 p.m.
"As the season went along and we had early losses to ODU and William and Mary, we realized the seeding was going to be important to not play one of those play-in matches," Head Coach Steve Secord said. "It was big to do well against Delaware, especially without Tommi [Nissinen]. It gave us a lot of confidence the rest of the way. That match was pivotal in getting us this seed."
The Dukes come into the championship with a 12-7 overall record and 2-3 mark in the CAA. Prior to a pair of losses against nationally-ranked programs to end the regular season, JMU had won six in a row and eight of nine.
The Seahawks, ranked 46th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, went 18-4 this season and are riding a four-match win streak. UNCW has also won 14 of its last 16 matches.
This is a rematch of last year's quarterfinals in which the Seahawks won 4-0.
"[UNC Wilmington] is probably expected to win, so hopefully the pressure is on them and we can come out and play loose," Secord said. "We want to have a good time and hopefully we can get the W."
The semifinals will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the championship match is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
