HARRISONBURG, Va., March 18, 2011 - James Madison (7-5) claimed the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to take a 6-1 victory from Norfolk State (2-10) on Friday at the Convocation Center Courts.
The Dukes had a pair of athletes go 2-0, as sophomores Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) and Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) each earned a win in singles and doubles.
JMU took the early 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches to claim the point.
The Dukes took the early advantage with an 8-1 win at No. 2 by sophomore Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward/Virtual) and Pool against Jonathan Sessom and Brian Bullock.
NSU evened it up with an 8-5 victory by Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks versus senior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson (Old Dominion)) and junior Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes (Wayne State)) at No. 1.
JMU clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 3 by Sentenac and senior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical) over Kent Austin and Christian Romanzini.
The Dukes upped the advantage to 2-0 when Sentenac cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Romanzini. Norfolk State got on the board with its lone singles victory when Culver topped Vladimirsky 6-2, 6-1 at No 1.
Junior Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) gave JMU a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Sessom, and the Dukes clinched the decisive fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 by junior Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) over Bullock.
Pool defeated Austin 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 and Moulin closed out the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 2 against Marks.
JMU returns to action March 23 with a home match against Liberty. That match is set for a 2 p.m. start at Hillside Courts.
