CONWAY, S.C., March 12, 2011 - Coastal Carolina (7-3) swept doubles and won four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 men's tennis victory against James Madison (6-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
The Chanticleers jumped out to the 1-0 lead after taking all three doubles matches. Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham defeated sophomores Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) and Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) 8-2 at No. 2.
CCU clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win by Alex Funkhouse and Danny Heidecker against junior Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes (Wayne State)) and senior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson (Old Dominion)) at No. 1.
Dorian Sovic and Yusuke Kusuda swept doubles play for Coastal with a 9-8 victory at No. 3 versus sophomore Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) and senior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical).
Coastal won four of six singles matches, three of which came in a third set. The lead grew to 2-0 when John Karle took a 6-1, 6-4 win against Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) at No. 6.
Vladimirsky got JMU on the board with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Gordon at No. 1. The Chanticleers responded with the next two decisions to claim the four points needed for the victory. At No. 4, Funkhouser won 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 versus Pool and Kusuda won 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 against Sentenac at No. 3.
Junior Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) rallied at No. 5 to round out the scoring for the Dukes with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Sovic. Heidecker concluded the dual match with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 victory against Moulin at No. 2.
The Dukes return to action next Friday, March 18 with a home match with Norfolk State at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center Courts on campus.
