BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 17, 2013 - Freshman Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) came up just short of qualifying for the main draw of the ITA Atlantic Regional, finishing 1-1 in the qualifier bracket on Thursday.
Kathol won his opening match over Radford's Javier Waase in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The win advanced him to the next round, where he took on Richmond's Noah Fenton, who also won his first match in three sets.
With a spot in the main draw on the line, the two battled three sets before Fenton topped Kathol, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
Freshman Miljan Ruzic (Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) also competed in the qualifier bracket. He lost his first match to Navy's Blake Daniel, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Daniel went on to win his next match in straight sets to advance to the main draw.
The Dukes have four players - freshman Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP), freshman Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby), sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) and sophomore Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) - set to compete in the main draw of the regional tournament, which begins with one round of singles play Friday.
One round of doubles will also be played Friday. The Dukes will be represented by two teams, as Stirling will team up with Ruzic and Salinas will pair with Moorhead.
