HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 6, 2011- James Madison Athletics is hosting Brian C. Johnson as its Annual Diversity Speaker on Oct. 17 at 7:15 p.m. in Memorial Hall. This will be the sixth year JMU will host this special event for its student-athletes.

The goal of the program is to help student leaders develop cross-cultural educational opportunities that get at the core issues of building more inclusive campus communities. Brian C. Johnson is known for his skillful programs that help audiences understand diversity without feelings of anxiety that often come along with the topic.

JMU Associate Athletics Director for Sports Programs Kevin White, who organized the event, is devoted to helping students understand diversity on the next level. "Our goal is to enlighten our students and bring a different twist to the word diversity. So often when we think talk about diversity we think of only color, but it is so much more than color. Its age, gender, nationality, and much more wrapped into one."

Brian C. Johnson uses what he calls "diversity-sneaky" programs that allow audiences to fully participate in this discussion about diversity without feeling uncomfortable. Nicole Jotso, a senior on the swimming and diving team, worked with White to help set up the event. She said, "After reading about what Brian Johnson has been doing in his diversity segments, I truly believe that he can have a huge impact on the students here at James Madison University."

Johnson's audience on Oct. 17 will consist of over 400 student-athletes at JMU. While set up with student-athletes in mind, the presentation is also open to other students at the university.
