POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team slipped one spot in the final round and finished 11th at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate, Oct. 21-23. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Kilmarlic Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,560 yards) in Powells Point, N.C.
All five players put scores in the 70s on the board for the second straight day, as the Dukes shot a 14-over 302 in the last round and finished in 11th at 47-over 911. Georgia Southern led from wire-to-wire, including shooting a tournament-low 11-under 277 in the final round to finish at 10-under 854 and win by 12 shots. Richmond was second at 2-over 866 after shooting an 8-under 280 in its final 18. Host Old Dominion was third at 4-over 868, with Radford and George Mason rounding out the top five teams at 5-over 869 and 11-over 875, respectively. Other Colonial Athletic Association foes in the field included Delaware (ninth), Drexel (t-13th) and Hofstra (17th).
Freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) was the top finisher for Madison in a tie for 23rd at 4-over 220, shooting a 1-over 73 in the last 18. Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) was next in a tie for 50th at 13-over 229, with junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) one shot back at 14-over 230 in a tie for 52nd. Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) was next in a tie for 64th as he improved in both his second and third rounds, including a 2-over 74 in the final round, to post a 21-over 235. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa. /Malvern Prep.) was the final JMU finisher in a tie for 73rd at 23-over 237.
Second-round co-leaders Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern and Radford's Weston Eklund both shot 2-under 70 in the final round to finish in a tie at 9-under 207, with Wolfes taking medalist honors on the first playoff hole. Daniel Walker of Richmond finished third at 7-under 209, with Georgia Southern's Charlie Martin in fourth at 4-under 212. VCU's Jake McNulty rounded out the top five individuals at 3-under 213.
The Dukes have wrapped up their fall portion of the 2012-13 schedule and will be back on the course Mon.-Tue., March 4-5 at the Davidson College Invitational. The two-day tournament will be played at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
