MORGANTON, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team put together their best rounds of the year and narrowly finished as runner-up at the 2012 Donald Ross Intercollegiate, Oct. 15-16. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was being played at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club (Par 70 - 6,718 yards) in Morganton, N.C.
After completing the second round in the morning, the Dukes had a slim two-shot lead over Lynn and four shots ahead of Wofford in third. JMU still managed to post a 5-over 285 in the final round, but several late three putts led to the Dukes' downfall, as Lynn slid by with a 2-over 282 to finish at 14-over 854, one shot ahead of Madison at 15-over 855. Wofford finished in third at 20-over 860, with High Point (27-over 867) and Elon (34-over 874) rounding out the top five teams.
Three Dukes tied for seventh at 3-over 213, as sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) and junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa. /Malvern Prep.) finished with the same score. Firebaugh was the top score for JMU in the final 18 with an even-par 70, while Koch and Smith had 71 and 73, respectively. Freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) tied for 36th at 10-over 220, including a final round 1-over 71, while senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished in a tie for 39th at 11-over 221.
"Everyone played really well this week," Head Coach Jeff Forbes said. "I am excited about our chances at ODU."
High Point's Chase Wilson was the medalist at 2-under 208, finishing one shot ahead of Casey Komline of Appalachian State at 1-under 209.
The squad will wrap up the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule on Sun.-Tue., Oct. 21-23 at the Outerbanks/ODU Collegiate. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
