LORTON, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team is in seventh through the first two rounds of the 2012 CHAMP/Patriot Intercollegiate, Sept. 29. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Laurel Hill Golf Club (Par 71 - 6,857 yards) in Lorton, Va.
The Dukes opened with an 11-over 295 to sit in fifth place, but posted a 20-over 304 in the afternoon to fall to seventh at 31-over 599. Missouri is in first at 2-under 266, 10 shots ahead of Delaware in second at 8-over 576. Hofstra is in third at 14-over 582, with Penn and Villanova tied for fourth at 20-over 588. JMU is four shots back of CAA-rival Towson in sixth at 27-over 595 and four shots ahead of George Mason in eighth at 35-over 603.
Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) is leading the Dukes at 3-over 145, in a tie for 12th. Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is tied for 38th at 9-over 151, with senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) two shots back at 11-over 153 in a tie for 49th. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep.) is tied for 55th at 13-over 155 with junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) rounding out the Madison scoring at 15-over 157, tied for 59th.
The Dukes have three freshmen competing as individuals. Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) is tied for 32nd at 8-over 150. Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) is tied for 38th at 9-over 151 and Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) is tied for 77th at 24-over 166. Walters and Kapsak played their first collegiate rounds.
Emilio Cuartero of Missouri is the 36-hole leader at 4-under 138, three shots ahead of Delaware's Ben Conroy at 1-under 141. Missouri's Jace Long and Hofstra's Jonathan Farber are one shot back of Conroy in a tie for third at even-par 142.
All 13 teams and individuals will go off on a shotgun start tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
