MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team struggled in the first two rounds and is in 12th through 36 holes of the 2012 VCU Shootout on Sept. 24. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Hermitage Country Club (Par 72 - 6,955 yards) in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
The Dukes posted a 27-over 315 in the morning round and improved five shots for a 22-over 310 in the afternoon for a two-round score of 49-over 625. Wichita State is the 36-hole leader at 4-over 580, seven shots ahead of Virginia Tech in second at 11-over 587. Iowa State is third at 15-over 591, with Long Beach State and Maryland close behind at 16-over 592 and 17-over 593, respectively.
Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) is leading the Dukes at 7-over 151, in a tie for 27th. Junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) is next, tied for 38th at 10-over 154. Senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) is tied for 63rd at 17-over 161, with senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) one shot back at 18-over 162. He is in 65th. Freshman Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) is the final Duke, currently tied for 66th at 21-over 165.
Maryland's Sean Bosdosh is the individual leader at 3-under 141, one shot ahead of Scott Fernandez of Iowa State, Louis Cohen Boyer of Wichita State and Long Beach State's Raymond Ho at 2-under 142.
All 12 teams will go off on a shotgun start tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m., with Madison playing with East Carolina and host VCU.
