RICHMOND, Va. - James Madison sophomore
Trey Smith has been named CAA Men's Golfer of the Week after earning medalist honors
during the first week of competition of the 2012-13 season.This is the first time in his career that Smith has earned the league's weekly award.
Smith shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to earn first place at the Golfweek Division I Program Challenge. The event was held at the par 72, 6,940-yard True Blue Plantation Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The sophomore led the JMU men's golf team to a tie for fourth place at the event. Smith posted all three rounds under par with scores of 68-67-70--205 to finish at 11-under and won the individual title by two shots over Central Arkansas' Austen Moix. Smith's 205 score is the third-best 54-hole total in JMU history, while the 11-under mark ranks second for under-par score in program history.
JMU will next be on the
course for the 2012 VCU Shootout, Mon.-Tue., Sept. 24-25. The
tournament will be played at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin Sabot,
Va.
