MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to earn medalist honors and lead the James Madison men's golf team to a tie for fourth at the 2012 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 9-11. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the True Blue Plantation Course (Par 72 - 6,940 yards) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Smith posted all three rounds under par with scores of 68, 67 and 70 to finish at 11-under 205 to win the individual title by two shots over Central Arkansas' Austen Moix. The 205 score is the third-best 54-hole total in JMU history, while the 11-under mark ranks second for under-par score at Madison.

"Trey played great this week," Head Coach Jeff Forbes said. "His ball striking and putting was phenomenal! All of Trey's hard work over the summer paid off this week with a win. The team played great the first day but we just couldn't put four scores together the last two rounds."

JMU shot a 6-over 294 in the final round to finish at 6-over 870 in a tie with Austin Peay and Western Carolina. Central Arkansas jumped from fifth to first with the low and only under-par round of the day, a 4-under 284, to finish at 2-under 862, two shots ahead of runner-up Jacksonville State at even-par 864. Troy finished third at 2-over 866.

Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) also posted a top-10 finish, tying for sixth at 3-under 213 after a final round 1-over 73. Senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) tied for 44th at 11-over 227, with freshman Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) two shots back at 229, tying for 47th. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa. (Malvern Prep.) rounded out the Madison effort in a tie for 53rd at 17-over 233.

JMU will next be on the course for the 2012 VCU Shootout, Mon.-Tue., Sept. 24-25. The tournament will be played at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin Sabot, Va.
