WILMINGTON, Del. - The James Madison men's golf team improved on its first-round score but the majority went lower and the Dukes slipped to eighth through two rounds of the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 28. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Wilmington Country Club's South Course in Wilmington, Del.
JMU improved three shots in its second round to post a 19-over 303 and a 36-hole score of 41-over 609, but the top seven teams all fired 297 or less to push the Dukes down the board. UNCW took the lead with an 11-over 295 and is at 28-over 596, one shot ahead of opening round leader Georgia State, which posted a 13-over 297 and a two-round score of 29-over 597, and Old Dominion, which shot a 6-over 290 and moved up three spots at 29-over 597. George Mason is in fourth at 32-over 600 after an 8-over 292, which VCU and Delaware are tied for fifth at 33-over 601. Delaware shot a tournament low 5-over 289 in the second 18.
Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and junior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) are tied for 13th at 10-over 152, as Smith posted a 4-over 75 in the second 18 while Vince had a 5-over 76. Freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) is in a tie for 21st at 11-over 153 after a second round 5-over 76, with senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) one shot back at 12-over 152 in a tie for 25th after also shooting a 5-over 76. Senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) completes the Dukes' lineup at 13-over 155, including his second round 8-over 79. Delaware's Greg Matthias took over the individual lead after his tournament low 3-under 68 in the second round put him at 2-under 140, two shots ahead of first-round leader Marc Dobias of VCU at even-par 142.
JMU will play the final round with William & Mary and Towson on Sunday, April 28, with the three squads starting off No. 10 at 9:45 a.m.
