WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In a tightly-grouped field, the James Madison men's golf team tied for 14th out of 29 teams at the 2012 C&F Bank Intercollegiate, March 25-27. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the College of William & Mary, was played at Kingsmill Resort's River Course (Par 71 / 6,831 yards) in Williamsburg, Va.
Starting the day in 13th, JMU, as did all the teams, found different weather conditions with a clear day with winds slightly lower, but coming off the water to make an effective drop of about 20 degrees in temperature. The Dukes dropped one spot into a tie for 14th after a final round 303 put them at 49-over 901 with USC Upstate, Loyola (Md.) and Boston College. Seventh though 19th places were separated by just 14 shots. Missouri led from wire-to-wire, though the margin shrunk three shots in the final round as the Tigers finished at 18-over 870, two shots better than UNCG and Old Dominion at 20-over 872. Francis Marion was fourth at 28-over 880, while Radford rounded out the top five squads at 30-over 882.
Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished as the leading Madison player as he tied for 20th at 8-over 221 after a final-round 5-over 76. Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) moved up 18 spots in the final round with a 1-over 72 to tie for 35th at 10-over 223. Redshirt-junior Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) tied for 63rd at 15-over 228, while senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) tied for 76th at 17-over 230. Freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) rounded out the JMU scoring at 28-over 241, tied for 129th. Winthrop's Kamito Hirai shot a final round 2-under 69 to finish at 2-under 211, two shots better than Missouri's Jace Long and Francis Marion's Sebastian Backlund tied for second at even-par 213.
The Dukes return to action on Mon.-Tue., April 9-10 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, being played at the Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, S.C.
