WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team battled the weather conditions and moved up four spots to 13th out of 29 teams through 36 holes of the 2012 C&F Bank Intercollegiate, March 26. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the College of William & Mary, is being played at Kingsmill Resort's River Course (Par 71 / 6,831 yards) in Williamsburg, Va.
Starting the day in a tie for 17th, JMU battled a pollen-filled windy day and shot a 16-over 300, one of just 10 teams to shoot 300 or better on the day, and is now in 13th at 30-over 598. Opening-round leader Missouri added to its lead an additional three strokes as the Tigers are at 8-over 576, five shots better than Old Dominion. UNCG is third at 15-over 583, with Radford at 18-over 586 and High Point at 19-over 587 in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Senior Chris Wellde
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is Madison's top player as his 2-over 73 put
him at 3-over 145 in a tie for 11th, with senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) next in a tie for 53rd
with fellow senior Mike Smith (Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) at 9-over 151, with Smith also posting a 2-over 73 in
the second round. Redshirt-junior Garrett
Va./Midlothian) is one shot back of Mozingo and Smith at 10-over 152 in
a tie for 68th. Freshman Trey
Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) completes the JMU scoring at 20-over
162, tied for 127th. Missouri's Jace Long and Emilio Cuartero along
with Francis Marion's Sebastian Backlund are tied at the top of the individual
leaderboard at 2-under 140. Average individual scores in the challenging conditions were more than two shots higher in the second round than the first.
The Dukes will go off No. 10 starting at 8:25 a.m., playing with Loyola (Md.) and Boston College.
