POWELLS POINT, N.C. - After two of three rounds, the James Madison men's golf team sits in eighth place at the ODU-Outerbanks Collegiate Golf Tournament, Oct. 24. The three-day, 54-hole event is being contested at the Kilmarlic Golf Course (Par 72 - 6,535 yards) in Powells Point, N.C.
After an opening-round 5-over 293, the Dukes posted a 7-over 295 to move into sole possession of eighth place at 12-over 588. Using three rounds of 68 or better, Liberty overcame Georgia's 10-shot lead in the opening round and moved into the team lead after a 12-under 286 put them at 19-under 557. Georgia is one shot back at 18-under 558 after a 1-under 287 in the second 18. Winthrop moved up two spots to third at 1-over 577, with Old Dominion in fourth at 5-over 581 and George Washington finishing the top five at 6-over 582.
Freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) continues to lead JMU after shooting a 3-over 75 leaves him in a tie for 12th at even-par 144. Junior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is in a tie for 26th at 3-over 147 after a second round 3-over 75. Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and junior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) are tied for 44th at 5-over 149, with Leeper having the top round of the day for Madison with a 1-under 71. Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is currently tied for 62nd at 8-over 152. Georgia's T.J. Mitchell continues to be the individual leader after a 2-under 70 in the second round put him at 10-under 134, one shot better than Liberty's Robert Karlsson at 9-under 135.
The Dukes will start their final round off No. 1 at 8:45 a.m., playing with Radford and George Mason.
