PINEHURST, N.C. -- James Madison University's men's golf team slipped late in the round but still is in second after the first round of the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, April 22. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Pinehurst Resort No. 8 (Par 72 - 7,092 yards) in Pinehurst, N.C., with the winner earning the league's automatic berth to one of six NCAA Regionals.
The Dukes played well as a group throughout the day, posting an 8-over 296 in the first round, even with the four counters going a combined six-over on the final two holes of the day. UNC Wilmington is the opening round leader at 6-over 294, two shots ahead of JMU. George Mason is third at 14-over 302, with VCU at 16-over 304. Georgia State wraps out the top-five teams at 19-over 307.
JMU has a pair of players among a four-way tie for the individual lead, as sophomore Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and junior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) were tied for the individual lead with UNCW's Josh Brock and Silas VanSky of George Mason at even-par 72.Vince had four birdies and four bogeys on the day, while Mozingo was very steady throughout the round, making 16 pars and having just one birdie and one bogey in his round. Junior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) was next for the Dukes at 3-over 75, good for a tie for 12th. Sophomore Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) is in a tie for 19th at 5-over 77, while junior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was the final Duke at 7-over 79 to put him in a tie for 30th.
Madison will go off the No. 1 tee with UNC Wilmington and George Mason, starting at 8:45 a.m.
