Men's Golf Tied for Eighth After First Two Rounds of Rutherford Intercollegiate

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.--The JMU men's golf team is currently tied for eighth after the first two rounds of the Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State played April 9th. *The teams played two of the three rounds today after bad weather pushed the first round back one day. The tournament is being played on the Blue Course at Penn State in State College, Pa.

Out of the 16 teams competing the Dukes moved up to tie for eighth after having placed ninth after the first round. The team carded a 22-over 306 during the first round. The Dukes finished the second round with a 20-over 304, two strokes fewer than the previous round. Penn State is in first place with rounds of 6-over 290 and 12-over 296 for a total of 586. The next closest teams are Army and Delaware, nine strokes behind Penn State with a total of 595 for the two first rounds. Loyola University in Maryland is currently in fourth after carding 599 over the two rounds, followed closely by Towson in fifth with a score of 600 for the first day.

The Dukes have been led by junior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) through the first two rounds with Mozingo coming in third after the first and currently tied for sixth firing rounds of even-par 71 and 5-over 76. Sophomore Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is currently tied for ninth after carding 3-over 74 during both rounds.  Junior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) carded 8-over 79 and 5-over 76 to tie for 39 th . Junior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is tied for 71 st with rounds of 11-over 82 and 9-over 80. Redshirt-sophomore Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) rounded out the team score tying for 78 th with rounds of 15-over 86 and 7-over 78. Individual player sophomore Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) is currently tied for ninth after consistently hitting rounds of 3-over 74.

With one round left in the tournament there is a tie for medalist between Penn State's T.J. Howe and Delaware's Justin Martinson.  Both of the players had scores of 1-under 70 and 2-over 73 in the first two rounds.

The teams will compete in their final round of the Rutherford Intercollegiate April 10 th , with tee-times starting at 8:30 a.m.
