TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- James Madison University's men's golf team improved on its first round by 16 shots and moved into ninth after two rounds of the 2011 Seminole Intercollegiate, March 12. Hosted by Florida State University, the three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Southwood Golf Course (Par 71 - 7,141 yards) in Tallahassee, Fla.
After an opening round 302, James Madison rallied to a 2-over 286 in its second 18 and improved to ninth at 20-over 588, four shots behind North Carolina in eighth. Arkansas held on to its first-round lead and currently is at 4-under 564, three shots better than host Florida State at 1-under 567. Kennesaw State is third at 3-over 571, with North Texas at 4-over 572. Mississippi State rounds out the top five teams at 10-over 578.
All five team members of JMU improved in the second round, with sophomore Ryan Vince
(Charlotte, N.C./Providence) as the top Duke after posting a team-best 1-under 70 in the second round and is currently tied for 16th at 2-over 144. Sophomore Rich Leeper
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) is one shot behind in a tie for 22nd at 3-over 145. Junior Chad Mozingo
(Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) is tied for 33rd at 5-over 147, while redshirt-sophomore Garrett Whitmore
(Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) is tied for 65th at 10-over 152. Junior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) rounds out the Madison team effort in a tie for 77th at 12-over 154. Playing as an individual, junior Chris Wellde
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is tied for 38th at 6-over 148.
Troy's Zach Portemont is the individual leader at 4-under 138, leading Brooks Koepka of Florida State and Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen by one shot at 3-under 139. Georgia State's Ross Mclister and Houston's Curtis Reed are next in a tie for fourth at 2-under 140.
JMU will start its final round off the No. 1 tee at 8 a.m., as the Dukes will play with Troy and North Carolina.
