NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --The James Madison men's golf team kicked off its spring break tournaments at the 2011 Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate, currently in fifth through the first 18 holes, March 6. Hosted by Appalachian State, the three-day, 54-hole event is being played at The Surf Golf and Beach Club (Par 72 - 6,917 yards) in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Dukes posted a 7-over 295 in the opening round to sit in fifth of the 12 teams participating. Kennesaw State University is the first-round leader at 4-under 284, five shots ahead of Gardner-Webb in second at 289. Campbell is third at 293, with Stetson next at 6-over 294. JMU is ahead of three past opponents, as George Washington, St. Bonaventure and George Mason currently occupy the three spots behind Madison, with the closest four shots back.
The top performer for the Dukes in round one was sophomore Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) who is tied for 16th at 1-over 73. Juniors Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease), Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Chad Monzigo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) all are one shot back at 2-over 74 in a tie for 20th, putting four of Madison's golfers in the top-20. Sophomores Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) also went for the Dukes, with Vince currently tied for 35th at 4-over 76 and Whitmore, playing as an individual, tied for 51st at 7-over 79.
The Dukes will go off in the next-to-last wave for the second round, playing with Stetson and George Washington. The group will start of the No. 1 tee beginning at 10:14 a.m.
