MEN'S GOLF SIGNS CRAWFORD, SMITH TO NATIONAL LETTERS
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- James Madison University men's golf has signed Matt Crawford (Redwood City, Calif./School for Independent Learners) and Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) to National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Jeff Forbes announced today. The pair will join the Dukes as freshmen for the 2011-12 academic year.

"I am very exceited about Trey and Matt coming to JMU," Forbes commented. " I think they will make an immediate impact on our program."
Crawford spent his high school career as part of the Olympic Club of San Francisco Junior Golf team, where he is currently the fifth-ranked golfer in Northern California's Class of 2011. He has earned a top-10 boys ranking in North California and Nevada during each year from 2006-2010. He was the medalist at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Qualifier in Fresno, Calif., with an 8-under 136. He then finished 94th at the U.S. Amateur in stroke play out of 312 golfers. He was a member of championship team in the 2010 Northern California North-South competition and the 2010 Championship Olympic Club Junior Team. In AJGA play, he has five top-30 finishes in his career, including a runner-up finish in the 2008 Trader Joes Open Championship after losing a playoff. He also has won 15 junior golf championships in Northern California and Nevada, including last summer's JGANC East Bay Junior Golf Championship. Also a competitive ice hockey player, Crawford has been a member of the Barons Hockey Club as well as the state finalist Belmont Rangers Junior Hockey Club. He plans to major in business marketing at Madison.
Smith is three-time First-Team All-District and two-time All-State golfer at Kellam, where he was the Virginia State High School Invitational Champion his junior year with a 3-under 141. He led the Knights to the Regional Title by 43 strokes his senior year where he also took home medalist honors at 3-under 141. He then went on to finish as runner-up in the Group AAA State Tournament, also breaking the tournament record with an 8-under 136 while leading Kellam to its first-ever state title in a boys team sport by eight strokes. He won the AJGA Preseason Junior at St. James Plantation and CJGT James River/Two Rivers Junior Golf Classic in Spring 2010, and followed it up by finishing 17th at the 2010 Virginia State Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship this past summer.
JMU returns to the course Mon.-Tue., Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2011 at the Jacksonville University Invitational. The two-day tournament will be played at the PLAYERS Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
